How Much Does SEO Cost, and What Drives the Price?

Why SEO quotes differ by a factor of ten — and how to tell what you are actually paying for before you sign

When a business starts looking for SEO, the first question is almost always the same: how much does it cost? And the answers differ wildly — from a few hundred dollars to several thousand a month for what sounds, on paper, like the same thing. For an owner counting every line of spend, that confuses more than it helps.

In our experience, an SEO price tells you nothing until you know what sits inside it. The same figure can mean full ongoing work — or a link package with no strategy behind it. Below is our working model of what makes up the price, the ranges we see on the market, and where to start so you don’t overpay for “cheap SEO” that turns out to be a different service entirely.

In short

A one-off SEO audit is typically a $2,500–5,000 project on the open market. Monthly retainers run roughly $500–2,000 for local businesses and $1,500–5,000 for small and mid-sized companies; the median monthly retainer across 439 providers polled by Ahrefs is $501–1,000, with an average of about $3,200. Hourly consulting averages around $111. Where you land inside a range depends on the scope of work — and “cheaper” almost always means a narrower scope, not the same result at a discount.

What does the price of SEO actually depend on?

The price is the scope of work required by your goal, multiplied by your market, the competitiveness of your niche and the state of the site at the start. The broader the goal and the tougher the market, the more work every month — and the higher the price. It is a quote for a specific job, not a tariff for “SEO in general”.

In our practice four things move the number (based on around 50 projects between 2024 and 2026):

  • Scope of work. An audit, keyword research, technical fixes, content, internal structure and links are different volumes of work. Eight articles a month and thirty articles a month cost differently because they are different amounts of work.
  • Market and language. A single-language site and a bilingual site built to enter a second market are not the same job. A second language adds localisation, hreflang and separate keyword research for each market.
  • Niche competitiveness. In a competitive niche it takes more content and more signals to move positions than in a narrow local one. That feeds straight into the monthly scope.
  • The state of the site. A site with technical problems or no structure needs more work in the first months. That is exactly what an audit shows — before you commit to a monthly budget.

What is included in a monthly SEO retainer?

A retainer is not one action but a set of work that holds and grows visibility: priorities from the audit, technical fixes, content matched to search intent, internal structure, external signals and reporting. The width of that set is what sets the price.

  • Technical work: indexation, speed, Core Web Vitals, fixing the errors that block growth.
  • Content for search intent: pages and articles that answer what your customers actually search for, not written to hit a word count.
  • Internal structure and linking: so that signals flow to the pages that bring enquiries.
  • External signals: links through outreach and digital PR, tied to the strategy rather than sold as a separate “link package”.
  • Measurement and reporting: what was done, what it produced and what comes next — in plain language, not a spreadsheet for its own sake.

The wider that set and the more often it runs, the higher the price. “Cheaper” almost always means a narrower set of work rather than the same retainer at a discount.

How much does SEO cost: the actual market ranges

Across the market, monthly SEO runs from roughly $500 for a local business to $5,000 and above for a competitive e-commerce or multi-market project, while a one-off audit is usually a $2,500–5,000 project. Where you land inside the range depends on the scope your goal requires.

Type of workMarket range (2026)
One-off SEO audit$2,500–5,000 as a project
Local business — monthly$500–2,000 / month
Small and mid-sized business — monthly$1,500–5,000 / month
Median monthly retainer (Ahrefs poll)$501–1,000 / month
Average agency retainer (Ahrefs poll)≈ $3,200 / month
Hourly consulting≈ $111 / hour on average

Those figures come from the Ahrefs survey of 439 SEO providers. Regional markets sit lower: in Poland, for instance, monthly SEO is commonly 800–2,500 zł for a local business and 2,500–6,000 zł for a small e-commerce store, with audits at 500–5,000 zł.

Our own SEO audit is $400 — a deliberate entry point: you get a prioritised list of work before committing to any monthly budget. Current retainer tiers are on the SEO services page.

Why does a bilingual site cost more?

Because a bilingual site is effectively two SEO jobs under one project: separate keyword research for each market, localisation instead of translation, and the technical setup of hreflang — the tag that tells Google which language version belongs to which audience.

Each version has its own demand: people in one market search with different words, not translated ones. That is why the price reflects double the research and content work plus the technical work on language versions. The starting point is the same for both: keyword research and a keyword map built per market, not copied across.

Why does the same “SEO” cost different amounts?

Because one word hides very different volumes of work. When two quotes differ by a factor of several, what differs is almost never the price of the same service — it is what the service contains.

In our view a lower price usually means a narrower scope, not a discount on the same outcome. A “50 links” package with no strategy and a retainer with technical work, content and measurement are two different things, even when both are called SEO. Compare what stands behind the figure: which work, how often, and how you will see the result.

What to ask before you sign. Ask for the monthly scope in writing, how often each item runs, and what the report looks like. If those questions have no clear answer, the low price is not your main risk.

Can a bigger budget buy top rankings?

No. Google states plainly that no one can guarantee a number one ranking, and advises caution with anyone who promises it. A bigger budget buys more work, delivered faster — not a position.

SEO also doesn’t produce results “next week”. Ahrefs’ own analysis puts meaningful movement in months rather than days. So our working model is to promise the process and transparent measurement, not a position for a given sum.

Where to start so you don’t overpay

With diagnosis, not with a retainer signed blind. An audit shows what is actually holding the site back and how much work is genuinely needed — then the budget follows the job rather than the other way round. It is the cheapest way to avoid paying monthly for a scope your site doesn’t need yet.

In our model the first step is an SEO audit from $400: a prioritised list of what affects growth, so you can decide what to do first on evidence rather than on a sales call.

Next step. Start with a free preliminary review or a full SEO audit — so the budget conversation is about your goal and your site, not a generic rate card.

Frequently asked questions about SEO pricing

How much does SEO cost per month?
Roughly $500–2,000 a month for a local business and $1,500–5,000 for a small or mid-sized company. The median retainer across 439 providers polled by Ahrefs is $501–1,000, with an average of about $3,200.
How much does an SEO audit cost?
On the open market a one-off audit is usually a $2,500–5,000 project. Ours is $400 as an entry point into diagnosis — the cheapest way to see what is holding the site back before you commit to a retainer.
What does an SEO retainer include?
Technical work, content matched to search intent, internal structure, external signals through outreach and digital PR, and measurement with regular reporting. The width of that set sets the monthly price.
How much does SEO cost for a bilingual site?
More than for a single-language one: separate keyword research per market, localisation rather than translation, and hreflang setup. The exact figure follows the scope, which the audit defines.
What does the price of SEO depend on?
The scope of work, your market and language, how competitive the niche is, and the state of the site at the start. A price is a quote for a job, not a tariff for “SEO”.
Why are some quotes so much cheaper?
Almost always the scope differs, not the price of the same service. “Cheaper” usually means a narrower set of work. Compare what is included, not only the number.
Does a bigger budget guarantee first place?
No. Google guarantees rankings to no one. A budget buys the volume and speed of work, not a position. What can be guaranteed is the process and transparent measurement.
How long before SEO pays off?
Expect months rather than weeks: Ahrefs’ analysis of ranking timelines points the same way. The first measurable signals are usually indexation and impressions, before clicks and enquiries follow.
Where should I start on a limited budget?
With an audit. It costs the least and shows what to do first, so you don’t spend months paying for a scope your site doesn’t need yet.
